Prosodic Constituency in HPSG

چکیده

The boundary between known and he is unsurprising, since it coincides with a syntactic boundary between a preposed adverbial phrase and the main clause. By contrast, the second prosodic constituent, he brought out departs dramatically from standard syntactic constituency; for the subject he has a tighter juncture with the following main verb (plus particle) than the latter does with its noun phrase object, the objections of everyone. One possible response to this kind of datum is to abandon conventional notions of surface syntactic constituency. This is the approach to prosodic constituency advocated by Steedman (1991), where the availability of function composition and type-raising in a combinatory catego-

Metrical phonology in HPSG

This paper proposes a new approach to the prosodysyntax interface inHPSG. Previous approaches to prosody in HPSG (Klein, 2000; Haji-Abdolhosseini, 2003) represent prosodic information by constructing metrical constituent structure in the tradition of (Selkirk, 1980; Liberman and Prince, 1977). One drawback of this approach is that it does not allow for a direct representation of purely metrical...

A Constraint-Based Approach to Information Structure and Prosody Correspondence

This paper provides a constraint-based account of information-prosody correspondence within the HPSG framework. The starting point of the paper is Klein’s (2000) account of prosodic constituency in HPSG. However, it departs from the standard syntactocentric architecture of grammar, and adopts a grammar design in which syntax, phonology, and information structure are generated in parallel, with ...

Prosodic patterning in distal speech context: Effects of list intonation and f0 downtrend on perception of proximal prosodic structure

Prosodic structure is often perceived as exhibiting regularities in the patterning of tone sequences or stressed syllables. Recently, prosodic regularities in the distal (non-local) context have been shown to influence the perceived prosodic constituency of syllables. Three experiments tested the nature of distal prosodic patterns influencing perceptions of prosodic structure, using eight-sylla...

Constituency, word order and focus projection

In this study we show that constituency is of limited importance for a proper treatment of the interaction between the linear position of a wa-marked nominal in a Japanese sentence and possible domains of contrastive focus, and that constraints concerning contrastive focus should be represented in terms of linear order and not constituency. Linearisation HPSG, where linear order is independent ...

Incremental Generation with Categorial Grammar and HPSG

The paper describes an approach to generation with HPSG based on earlier work with categorial grammar. We show that a non-incremental generation algorithm for categorial grammar and indexed logical form can easily be adapted for use with HPSG and MinimalRecursion Semantics. However, if the algorithm is modiied to support incremental generation, diierent notions of syntactic constituency become ...
